Wow. This is a great story with believable characters who have a lot of depth to them. The main character Starla is 9 and a real firecracker. I loved reading Crandall’s descriptions of Starla’s life and moods. Starla can’t help herself when she breaks Jimmy’s nose after he bullies another kid. She gets put on “restriction” by her strict grandmother often for anything from forgetting to take out the trash to “sassing”. This is a gem of a story. The plot follows Starla as she runs away, meets Eula, a black woman who takes care of her, and travels with Eula in the south during the troubling year of 1963. Highly recommended for fans of “The Help”. This would make a great book club pick.
