Language of Mankind Book Review of Whistling Past the Graveyard

The first thing that struck me about this book was the cover art. For those of you who know me, you know I must really like it if I bothered to mention it. Now on to the book.

I fell in love with Starla. I laughed when she spoke about controlling her red rage, I cried when she was punished for not being able to control said rage, and I felt sad when that rage would have done her good. The book is told from her perspective and it’s so refreshing to read a book from a child’s point of view that isn’t skewed by the authors pen and sounds honest and true.

As the book revolves around Starla we don’t get much insight as to what is going on back home during her adventures, and while this bothered me in the beginning, it quickly became all about her and her growth and I couldn’t care less what her past life was dealing with.

Very well written and a must not miss. Perfect for a book club.

Perfect for a book club. It’s a great read. One where you learn the ups and downs of living as a young white girl figuring out that what has been taught to her in the past about separation just might not be true. You read and discover with her how love and not the color of someone’s skin is true measure of a person. She kept trying to get to a fantasy life from her mind, when she had already found what she was looking for from a stranger.

It was very well written and a must not miss. Perfect for a book club.
